What is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy? (MBCT)

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MCBT) and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is designed to help you deal with persistent, unwanted mood states that undermine your ability to cope with, and enjoy, everyday life. It can help you take back control and could be an effective alternative to medication.

Is there any research?

Extensive research has been carried out to evaluate the results of MBCT (Mindfulness based cognitive therapy) in depression.  Six trials, across the world, have shown that patients with three or more past episodes of depression have reduced the rate of further episodes by 40-50%. It has proved to be as effective as maintenance antidepressants in preventing relapse.*

Mindfulness techniques are rapidly gaining recognition and respect among healthcare professionals. Indeed, The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recommended that National Health Service doctors and other healthcare professionals offer mindfulness programmes to help overcome the symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety.
